The Effects of Integrative Arts Therapy on Depression of the Elderly

|
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of integrated arts therapy on depression of elderly people. The objects for the study include eight people, who represent the experimental group with higher than 60 T-score in Korean Depression Scale (KDS-30) and seven people for the control group, selected from a pool of sixty-five elderly people who were sixty-five years of age or older, and patrons of two health care centers in the jurisdictions of E-gun, C-do. This study consisted of applying twelve 120 minute sessions of integrated art therapy to the experimental group by using pre-to-post inspection control group design, and special arbitration was not provided to seven people in the control group. The result of the study is as follows: It was shown that the experimental group that participated in the integrated arts therapy had positive influence on the change of overall depression scores compared to the control group. Therefore, it is determined that the integrated arts therapy conducted in this study has an effort in reducing senescence depression. This study is meaningful in that it proposed a measure of expanding the role of health care centers by adopting the integrated arts therapy as part of their programs to reduce depression in elderly people living in the rural areas where exposure to various cultural approach is difficult and the ratio of elderly population is high.
